Bank notes can have some similarities with books we put into our shelves to show off, but have never really closely examined — let alone read. Millions of copies, tucked away in people’s homes, gradually changing from their “just purchased” clean look to a more yellowed afterlife. In the case of Australia’s new 50-dollar note, released last October, that happened more than six months later. In 1921, she became Australia’s first member of Parliament, for which she has been honoured on Australian bank notes since 1995. In extremely fine print, in lines of type to the left of Cowan’s portrait, the word “responsibility” is spelled “responsibilty,” twice.
