In a landmark decision, the U.S. Senate approved the referral of Indian-American litigator Roopali H Desai to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, making her the first to serve in this powerful court. After a 67-29 bipartisan vote held Thursday, the US Senate made history by formalizing the announcement and appointing Roopali Desai as the first South Asian judge in a powerful American court. Headquartered in San Francisco, California, the Ninth Circuit is by far the largest of the 13 courts of appeals, covering a total of nine states and two territories, and has 29 judges. From 2005 until 2006 she served as law clerk to Chief Judge Mary Schroeder of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Roopali Desai began representing the Arizona Secretary of State’s office after the 2020 US presidential election, but conflict arose over the state’s outcome.
