Acting road policing manager Senior Sergeant Vaughn Lapslie said younger people tend to be “more educated on drink driving than older generations, who may have often participated in drink driving during their earlier years. “When I first joined the police, (drink driving) wasn’t frowned upon as much as it is now. “What you do find with drink driving is it’s a behavioural trait for some people. On a national scale, the Ministry of Justice says the average age of convicted drink drivers sits at 33 for 2018. Offenders in the Canterbury district are similar to the national statistics, with the average age of convicted drink drivers sitting at about 33-34.
