Whiritoa farmer's compensation claim thrown out by council

A Hauraki resident has been unsuccessful in requesting compensation from council for alleged loss of income over a silt pile on grazing land. The claimant, who lives at Whiritoa, made a claim against Hauraki District Council for compensation for loss of income and costs incurred because of work undertaken by the local government organisation. In March, 2018, council believes a significant weather event resulted in a slip upstream of the claimant's property, creating a dam. The allegation being made – and the basis for the compensation claim – is that the loss in income is directly attributable to the poor condition of the stock. The poor condition of the stock is a result of a loss in grazing due to the silt stockpiled on the land.
