40A: A sleeper cell is a very serious thing, and while I realize that this is a play on words, I’m torn on how it sits with me. The joke is that a cellphone that is sleeping is ON SILENT. But “What goes above and beyond?” is a fresh and funny clue, which always redeems a gluey entry. They were a family of extraterrestrials from the planet Remulak with — wait for it — conical heads who were stranded on Earth and forced to try to blend in. They first appeared in the 1977 season opener.
