You may have heard the startling news, and immediately felt terrible for the poor fellow: Cristiano Ronaldo has been fined 3805 euros, or about $4500, by the Spanish soccer federation for shoving referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea in a Spanish Super Cup match against Barcelona. Where will Ronaldo get the money to pay such a steep fine? This is not to suggest that Ronaldo has gotten away with murder in this instance. Say what you will about Ronaldo, but he is an intensely competitive athlete who will ache while sitting in the stands during these games. For him, $6,000 represented less than two hundredths of one percent of his salary.
