Empathy plus perspectiveWe become closely emotionally involved with the fortunes our favourite teams; it’s no secret that they can affect our sense of community, even our sense of identity and self-worth. But while those feelings are normal, that child shouldn’t feel bad about themselves when their favourite team has lost. Remind them of all the great things they can look forward to even though their favourite team’s season might be over. In other words, having a favourite team makes you part of a community of fans. They can still talk about their favourite players, wear their favourite hats and jerseys, and watch video highlights from previous games and seasons.
