The five Partner States of the East African Community (EAC) are about to adopt Kiswahili as their regional official language. Although there are a few concerns about the language, if it eventually becomes the region’s official language, it would mean better times for the people. On Monday, the legislative arm of the EAC, East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), announced that it had finally resolved to make Kiswahili the second official language for the region in addition to the English language. It is a lingua franca of the African Great Lake region, and East African countries. Despite the popularity of Kiswahili in East African countries, especially among locals, it is yet to be adopted as their first official language.
