West Coast councils fight back against 'unelected' governance groupMARTIN DE RUYTER/STUFF The West Coast is the fastest growing tourism region in New Zealand with a visitor spend in the local economy of $549m. But two West Coast mayors have slammed the "unelected" group saying it has kept elected representatives out of the loop. Tourism West Coast currently receives $100,000 each from Buller, Grey and Westland district councils and Development West Coast. Development West Coast recently wrote to the three councils asking them to dissolve Tourism West Coast by withdrawing their representatives from the board. "Next thing I know we are being told to make changes to the structure of Tourism West Coast and that the Development West Coast and regional council will take over funding.
