Pacifica Shipping chief executive Steve Chapman said his company was adding capacity for cargoes that would previously have travelled by truck and trailer and rail wagons. Trucking Association chief executive David Boyce said he was confident the industry would cope albeit there would be delays. The NZ Transport Agency said it was working with Kaikoura District Council to open the inland route by the weekend. Road Transport Forum chief executive Ken Shirley said SH1 along the Kaikoura coast was a sensitive piece of road and there would be limited options for realignment.
