Weakness in the financial sector as well as health care and technology stocks pulled the main index on the Toronto Stock Exchange into the red. The S&P/TSX composite index was down 28.60 points to 15,227.75 after 90 minutes of trading. In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 52.59 points to 22,032.75, the S&P 500 index declined 4.88 points to 2,470.04 and the Nasdaq composite index lost 31.03 points to 6,339.43. The Canadian dollar was trading at 78.65 cents U.S., down from an average price of 78.91 cents U.S. on Tuesday. The September crude contract was down two cents to $49.15 (U.S.) per barrel and the September natural gas contract was up five cents at $2.88 per mmBTU.
