The data from Moderna's trial involving 30,000 volunteers also showed the vaccine prevented cases of severe COVID-19, a question that still remains with the Pfizer vaccine. One unknown with this vaccine, and all the others currently being tested, is whether they will stop COVID-19 spreading. Moderna has received nearly $1 billion in research and development funding from the U.S. government and has a $1.5 billion deal for 100 million doses. Russia licensed its Sputnik-V COVID-19 vaccine for domestic use in August before it started large-scale trials.
