I’m not saying “We Built This City” is a great song. Its reputation as Worst of All Time — rubber-stamped by Rolling Stone readers on its 10 Worst Songs of the 1980s list — is less a result of musical incompetence, I suspect, than the hive mind of social media. It’s a pop song, for crying out loud. Ultimately, there’s no empirical measurement of “best” or “worst.”There are those who will go to their graves insisting “We Built This City” is an abomination of the first order. I think for many critics, ‘We Built This City’ was just more likely to be on their radar.
