Wednesday's weather in Timaru was as forecast “fine and warm” with “northwesterlies, gusty in the afternoon” but the expected high of 20 degrees was passed in early afternoon with the MetService website showing a high of 21.4 degrees. Metservice meteorologist Dan Corrigan said north-westerly winds coming over the Southern Alps are the reason for the warm temperatures. “The north-westerlies warm and dry out coming over the Southern Alps towards the Canterbury region,” Corrigan said. In comparison, Timaru's high temperature for August 2019 was 19.4 degrees while the month's historical average high is 19.8.
