When it’s time to make decisions, the best lack all integrity and the worst are full of malevolent intensity. Better, many think, to give a panel of appointed arms-length experts a cheque and let them tell us when they’re done. And especially frustrating to me when politicians explicitly vote not to study a question or seek expert advice, or to keep what advice they have confidential. If politicians make bad decisions because we want them to, indeed because we reward them for it, then we’re getting the representation we deserve. If we want better decisions from our elected officials, we need to make better decisions in selecting our elected officials.
