Porter—a supply chain management consultant in Vancouver, Canada—dipped a toe in the water slowly. The 2010 graduate of University of British Columbia started out by taking a single 10-week course related to supply chain management, taught by MIT professor Chris Caplice. The five online courses cost her $150 each. When Porter applied to MIT’s master’s degree program in logistics, materials and supply chain management and got accepted, MIT also offered her a fellowship. The site, founded by Harvard University and MIT in May 2012, now has 13 million students around the world.
