Waikato University academic calls for default unionism

Waikato University professor Mark Harcourt believes there should be default unionism for employees in NZ, rather than opting-in to union membership. Waikato Management School professor Mark Harcourt and law professor Margaret Wilson are two of four academics investigating default unionism in New Zealand. The proposal is not a return to New Zealand's past of compulsory unionism, Harcourt said. Harcourt said studies from overseas proved the decline of union membership was a major factor in the rise in income inequality. He said there was no need for the policy, because declining union membership showed people did not want to join.
