New Zealand seamer Neil Wagner has helped Essex to their first English County Championship in 25 years in their first season back in the top division. Essex clinched the title with two games to spare after nearest rival Lancashire lost to Somerset, giving them an an unassailable lead in the Division One standings. After being contracted for the first half of the season, Wagner returned to the county last month as a replacement for Pakistan bowler Mohammad Amir, who returned home for the birth of his child. The former England captain played an important role in the road to the title, scoring 667 runs in total at a team-high average of 66.70.
