India accounts for most TB deaths in the world, and the disease symptomises our biggest health challenge. When people with lung TB cough, sneeze or spit, they propel the TB germs into the air. TB patients are usually prescribed six months of treatment, but do not always complete the course because of various barriers. The family has no clue that the Centre has announced a social support of Rs 500 a month for each TB patient. It’s not surprising then that of the 27.9 lakh patients estimated in India in 2016, only 19.38 lakh are notified.
