Kinsella has ended his own life at the age of 81 under Canada's assisted-dying law. Kinsella wrote more than 20 books, most famously Shoeless Joe. The novel won the Books in Canada First Novel Award, now the Amazon.ca First Novel Award, when it was published in 1982, and was adapted into the 1989 film Field of Dreams. In 2011, Kinsella was awarded the Jack Graney Award, which recognizes individuals for their significant contribution to the game of baseball in Canada, for Shoeless Joe. Kinsella died Friday, Sept. 16 at his home in Hope, B.C.
