Volkswagen board eyes damage claims against former CEO Martin Winterkorn over emissions cheating scandal

BERLIN — Former Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn may never see the inside of a courtroom in the United States in connection with the company’s diesel emissions scandal. A VW spokesman says the German automaker’s supervisory board is checking whether it can demand damage claims from Winterkorn in connection with the company’s diesel emissions cheating scandal. Winterkorn, 70, was indicted Thursday in the United States on charges of fraud and conspiracy stemming from the company’s diesel emissions cheating scandal. He later told the German parliament that he did not know of the emissions cheating during the years it was going on. Two Volkswagen executives have been sentenced to prison terms in the United States.
