The telecoms operator has notified the Data Protection Commissioner about a potential breach after its main Twitter accounts were temporarily taken over by third parties. Vodafone has temporarily disabled its main Twitter customer care account, as well as that of its subsidiary Clear Mobile, after a third party gained access. The two Twitter accounts have almost 80,000 followers between them. The Twitter accounts have not tweeted in over a week while Vodafone tries to resolve the issue. Companies with customer care accounts on social media platforms such as Twitter often use third party applications and software to manage the accounts.
