ColumnistOver the summer, CBS News’s “Sunday Morning” did a piece celebrating the anniversary of the U.S. Zip code. It caught my eye because the Zip code identified the neighborhood where I grew up in Arlington. D. Jamison Cain was a postal executive instrumental in introducing the Zip code in 1963. Some of the publicity materials included sample envelopes addressed to show the Zip code in use. By the time the figure was retired in 1983, nearly 100 percent of the mail that crisscrossed the country used the Zip code.
