The SP warned: “Stern action will be taken against anyone who dares to set up any unauthorised cattle market in the district. I want to make sure people know that no illegal cattle markets will be allowed as they cause agonizing traffic congestion particularly on the highways.”According district police, there are a total of 241 authorized cattle markets in the city. Chittagong district livestock office informed that this year a total of 259 authorized cattle markets including the makeshift ones would be set up in 14 upazilas of Chittagong. Cattle markets set up on busy thoroughfares are a common scenario every year during Eid-ul-Azha. In many places of the country, unauthorized cattle markets are set up by local influential people, allegedly, backed by ruling party men.
