With the Election Commission calling elections in Gujarat, a critical electoral battle for Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been flagged-off. In the normal course, this round of polls should not have garnered much attention given the BJP’s political dominance since 1998. However, the BJP has the huge advantage of home ground, the presence of a star batsman and a massive contingent of ground staff. That result will negate talk of slowing of the Modi juggernaut and dispel fears that demonetization and rollout of GST proved politically costly. It is also likely Shah may be singled for attack as this would signal an assault on Modi by proxy.
