Vibrant club celebrates 50 record-breaking yearsLIU CHEN / STUFF President of the Pakuranga Athletic Club, Mike Trathen, standing on the Yvette Williams Track, with the clubrooms behind him. The past 50 years have seen the Pakuranga Athletic Club in East Auckland grow from a shed at Ti Rakau Park to a large group with 900 members across five sections from all over the city. To commemorate the half-century jubilee, the club is organising a whole-day celebration on October 28. "We would really like to see as many current and past club members as well as members of the community attending our celebrations," says Mike Trathen, who joined the club in 1996 and took over as president in May. "Developing to where it is today" is the biggest achievement for the club, he says, and it has the "strategical goal" of being able to host international athletics events in the future.
