They also expressed their worries about mushrooming of unauthorised CNG conversion centres and rampant use of lower-standard gas cylinders. The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) in Chittagong, however, claimed that they were taking strict measures against the users of unfit cylinders. After the incidents, fire service officials and police said that the accidents took place because of use of defective gas cylinders. According to a government circular published in 2002, gas cylinders must undergo fitness tests every five years. “Faulty and expiated gas cylinders are posing great risk for commuters while public transport which run by CNG gas should be retested timely for escaping the risk”, he added.
