An Auckland military academy is the first charter school to lodge an application to become a special character school. Education Minister Chris Hipkins said on Monday the school had applied to transition to a special character school. On Monday, Hipkins said the level of funding Vanguard might receive as a special character school was "broadly comparable" to what it received as a charter school. A special character school is a state school with a character that sets it apart from other state schools.
