Sonargaon police station Officer-in-Charge Md Moniruzzaman confirmed the Dhaka Tribune that the duo were supporters of the upazila's vice-chairman candidate Omar Babu alias Babul Hossain, an Awami League-backed independent candidate, who was running in the polls under the tubewell symbol. He said a group of youths, with explosives in their possession, were planning to occupy the polling centre. However, police chased them while they were trying to flee after blasting the improvised bombs.
