University of Michigan President Mark Schlissel has said the school stands to lose as much as $1 ... [+] billion this year. School officials were recommending a tuition hike of 1.9% at the Ann Arbor and Dearborn campuses and a 3.9% increase in Flint to make up some of the losses. But today the university regents rejected the proposal in a 4-4 vote. One of the regents who voted against the tuition hike, Denise Ilitch, said it was “plain wrong” to raise tuition when the pandemic has inflicted massive unemployment, pay cuts and business closures. A survey of 8,000 students conducted by the student government showed that a majority of students thought they deserved a tuition discount of at least 20%.
