Unions urge ministers to build Royal Navy supply ships to back British industry

“Without it, this strategically vital industry may not survive.”The MoD triggered fury by launching a worldwide competition to build the ships. “If ministers want to assess the requirements for new FSS ships they need to realise that world-class aircraft carriers are useless without world-class support ships. "Don’t let them drift away - build these ships in Britain.”Shadow Defence Secretary Nia Griffith said: “The Government has been dragging its feet on these orders for months. “It is high time for them to do the right thing and award the contracts for these ships to UK yards. “Most other countries look out for their industrial workforce and award valuable work at home.”Speaking in the Commons earlier this week, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace urged MPs to “watch this space” over FSS.
