French oil giant Total SA has long had an appetite for politically risky deals. Now, it’s tapping resources in Russia and other tricky spots across the globe to become one of the world’s biggest natural gas suppliers. Total last month doubled down on Russia by buying a 10% stake in Russian gas producer PAO Novatek’s $26 billion Arctic LNG project. The company has been under U.S. sanctions since 2014 that were imposed in response to Russia’s annexation of Crimea.
