A date tree with burn marks stands beside the mud road where the village once stood, bearing the only evidence of the fire. Madarpur village, where the community of mostly indigenous Santals is living now, has been cordoned off by a wire fence from the mill-controlled land. The residents said they had almost enough clothes to survive the cold, but they did not have food or work. Suchitra Mohanto, a Santal, told the Dhaka Tribune that they had very little food left. Gaibandha Deputy Commissioner Abdus Samad was asked whether the administration had any plans for the rehabilitation of the community.
