Uber Cup: Malaysia now depend on a miracle to reach quarter-finals

BANGKOK: Only a miracle can help Malaysia reach the quarter-finals of the Uber Cup following a 3-2 defeat to Indonesia in Monday’s opening Group D tie. Malaysia, who took the gamble to scratch the women's pairs, knew a win against the Indonesians would have most secured their place in the last-eight. Despite the setback, team captain Vivian Hoo said the decision to scratch the pairs was necessary and there was no regret among the players and coaches. Earlier, Soniia Cheah gave Malaysia a flying start when she clawed back from a game down to upset Fitriani Fitriani 10-21, 21-17, 21-14. It was a little too late for Uber Cup debutante S.Kisona as her 21-23, 23-21, 21-13 win over Ruselli Hartawan did little to change Malaysia's fortunes.
