But the United States generally lived up to its proclamation. And at home the United States practised the democracy it preached. But federal politics, the window through which would-be democrats elsewhere see the United States, has gone off the rails. The United States clings to a first-past-the-post two-party system long after more democratic countries, including ours, have opted for more representative systems.
