State Department spokesman Mark Toner said more than 100 Afghan soldiers were killed and more than 60 others were wounded in Friday's attack on an army base outside the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif. "This was an attack on the soldiers as they were returning from prayer. Toner noted that the Afghan defense minister and his army chief had resigned Monday in the wake of the attack. America has spent approximately $1 trillion in warfighting and reconstruction in Afghanistan since the US-led invasion in late 2001.
