The Department of US Treasury imposed Tuesday sanctions on the senior commander in Haftar's forces, Mahmoud al-Werfalli, for committing human rights violations. Al-Werfalli is responsible for, or complicit in, or participated directly or indirectly in serious human rights violations since 2016. He carried out or ordered the killing of 43 unarmed detainees in 8 separate incidents, according to the US embassy. On January 24, 2018, Al-Werfalli was filmed carrying out a mass execution of 10 unarmed detainees in Benghazi. However, Haftar's forces command recently announced that it will not extradite al-Werfalli, and he was released after interrogation.
