Critics say he is jeopardizing the US relationship with an ally and neighbour whose cooperation Washington needs on a range of issues, including security. Tillerson later met with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, saying they both agreed the two countries’ relationship remained strong. Mexico and Canada’s top diplomats also played down tensions, despite Trump’s tirades and a recent series of trade disputes between the Washington and Ottawa. Videgaray stayed mum as Tillerson sought to explain Trump’s wall proposal and immigration crackdown as part of a shared security push.
