UNHCR thanks Bangladesh for keeping borders open

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees thanked the Bangladesh government and its people on Monday for their hospitality towards more than 435,000 Rohingya refugees who fled to Bangladesh from Myanmar in past months. UNHCR Filippo Grandi said: ““The spontaneous outpouring of support from the local community, companies and associations across the country has been phenomenal.”Also Read- Bangladesh issues birth certificates to Rohingya children as Myanmar citizens“I thank Sheikh Hasina and Bangladesh for keeping the borders open to receive these refugees. In today’s world that is something that cannot be taken for granted and should be appreciated,” said Grandi, who has been in Bangladesh since September 23. “Their situation remains desperate, and we risk a dramatic deterioration if aid is not rapidly stepped up,” he said. UNHCR experts are currently working closely with Bangladesh government to set up an organised site with water, sanitation and other facilities.
