UNHCR readies aid amid fresh refugee surge in Bangladesh

The UN Refugee Agency is rushing relief supplies to the border areas amid reports that an estimated 10,000 Rohingya refugees crossed into Bangladesh on Monday. This sudden influx follows the recent slowing arrivals, said a statement issued by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). However, in recent days local people in the Anjumanpara area of south-eastern Bangladesh have reported hearing gunfire in Myanmar. According to Bangladesh border guards, the influx through the Anjumanpara border crossing point started Sunday night and had passed the 6,000 mark by Monday afternoon. In Shahporidwip near the southern tip of Bangladesh, UNHCR is already supporting the authorities at a transit centre for boat arrivals.
