UNITED NATIONS (PA) – The United Nations on Thursday warned that some UN agencies and aid groups would be forced to shut down operations in Ethiopia’s besieged Tigray region if humanitarian supplies, fuel and money fail. UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said no trucks carrying food and other aid had been able to enter Tigray since December 15 and the humanitarian situation “continues to deteriorate” . As of January 3, he said, the UN partners who distributed food and other aid in Tigray had only about 10,000 liters of fuel left. “At least 60,000 liters of fuel are needed to deliver the limited food reserves available in Mekele,” he said. Without money, the UN cannot buy local supplies and pay local staff, Dujarric said, and without fuel it cannot move trucks to deliver food or go to areas where it is not.
