Two lightning strikes kill 6 in remote Ethiopia

Six people have died in two lightning accidents in Ethiopia’s northeastern Afar regional state, the regional Disaster Risk Management office confirmed on Wednesday. They died in two tragic incidents in separate lightning strikes in two districts of Ethiopia’s north eastern Afar regional state early this week, it was noted. The two lightning strikes were accompanied by heavy rain and thunderstorm in the two districts, claiming six human lives and four cattle, it was indicated. The Afar regional state in northeastern part of Ethiopia, with majority arid and semi-arid climate conditions, is prone to negative weather conditions, including the recent El Nino driven drought that hits the country since 2015. The tragedies occurred amid the Ethiopian Meteorology Agency’s latest warning over the prospect of above-average rainfall with a probable thunderstorm.
