more-inThe Food Safety department and the Chennai Corporation’s Health department are carrying out an investigation into two cases of cholera diagnosed at a private hospital in Nandanam. The cases were detected among patients in the hospital, and three more patients are suspected to have been infected. Senthil Nathan, health officer, Chennai Corporation, said that the infection was found to have been contained within the hospital and there were no cases with similar symptoms reported. Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae and can be fatal if left untreated. While the State has not recorded any confirmed cases of cholera in two years, there have been many cases of diarrhoea and dysentery.
