Two black belts in the Agate familyJamie Searle/Fairfax NZ Jess Agate and her father Tony have trained hard to attain black belts in karate. Jess Agate went from learning ballet to karate training as a 6-year-old. Jess Agate has a bachelor of environmental management and works as a swimming instructor at Splash Palace in Invercargill. Karate belt colours start at white (for beginners), with subsequent grades being white with black tip, yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, brown and black.
