The death toll in Monday's suicide attack in a crowded area near the defence ministry in the Afghan capital, Kabul, reached at least 24, with 91 people wounded, including civilians, a spokesman for the public health ministry said. The toll might rise further, the spokesman, Mohammad Ismail Kawousi, added. The Taliban's main spokesman said an initial explosion near the defence ministry and other government departments on Monday was followed minutes later by a larger blast, when a suicide bomber blew himself up. He said dozens of soldiers and officers were killed and wounded, but there was no immediate official confirmation. A Taliban attack on the defence ministry in February killed at least 15 people and wounded more than 30.
