The fascia of Toyota’s new Avalon, the fifth generation of its large sedan, won’t soon be forgotten. The U.S.-based staff at Toyota’s Calty Design studios pushed the envelope when striving to distinguish the new Avalon’s looks from the model’s mildly bland generations one through four. Hunter concedes that Avalon’s design could be “polarizing.” Here’s the thing about polarity: If enough shoppers are attracted, it won’t matter how many are repelled. Last year, large sedan sales in the U.S. were 368,756, down more than 10% from a year earlier. With Avalon, Toyota is betting that lots of interest in large sedans remains – and those with this automotive mindset may find the new generation’s eye-catching looks reason enough to buy.
