Courtesy: ABP AnandaCalcutta: Large-scale violence and malpractices during Monday's panchayat elections showed the government and the state election commission were not equipped to handle single-phase polls despite claims to the contrary in court, officials said. "The faults occurred as the state administration succumbed to the pressure of holding single-phase elections. "This time, no such arrests were made, resulting in habitual offenders being allowed to roam free on polling day. This sent out a very wrong message to those involved in malpractices, allowing them to go all-out on polling day," said another official. A poll-related case will come up for hearing in the Supreme Court in July," said a source.
