Turkey says U.S.-based cleric Gulen could flee for Canada

Last week, Minister of Foreign Affairs Stéphane Dion said Canada had rebuffed the Turkish government’s requests for information on the Gulen movement in Canada. RelatedThe U.S. has told Turkey to present evidence against Gulen and let the U.S. extradition process take its course. The Turkish government blames Gulen for masterminding the failed July 15 coup, a charge the U.S-based cleric denies. Turkey believes that the Muslim cleric it accuses of organizing a recent coup attempt may flee his home in the United States, and possibly head to Canada. The Hizmet movement, also known as the Gulen movement, is described as a global network based on the teachings of Gulen, who is a critic and former ally of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
