The U.S. is jeopardizing the livelihood of Canadian dairy farmers, concentrated in Central Canada; and the 60,000 Canadian forest-products workers in B.C. Its new duties imposed on Canadian dairy and forest products are almost certainly a violation of World Trade Organization (WTO) principles. And why wouldn’t there be a U.S. glut of dairy products, when U.S. dairy farmers receive about $4 billion (U.S.) a year in subsidies from Uncle Sam? Yet in describing Canadian trade practices as “a disgrace,” Trump lumps Canada in with countries whose huge trade surpluses against the U.S. really are a significant issue for America.
