Trump effect: Infosys to hire 10,000 Americans in 2 years

(Reuters)Calcutta, May 2: Infosys has decided to appease the Trump administration by announcing plans to hire 10,000 American software engineers over the next two years and house them in four new innovation centres in the US. Indian software giants have been accused by the Trump administration of cornering temporary visas under the H1-B programme to fly employees out of India to displace US workers. The US is looking to rework the lottery system under which it hands out 65,000 H1-B visas every year. Last month, two industry sources had said Infosys was applying for just under 1,000 H1-B visas this year, down from about 6,500 applications in 2016 and around 9,000 in 2015. The National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) had said Infosys and TCS accounted for only 7,504 (8.8 per cent) of the approved H-1B visas in 2014-15.
